A CT (CAT) scan – CT is short for computed tomography – is an excellent technique for studying the interior of the body, especially the chest and abdomen. Because they provide detailed pictures of many types of tissue, including the lungs, bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels, CT scans are the best method for diagnosing a range of conditions, including cancers (especially of the lung, liver, and pancreas), cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma, and musculoskeletal disorders.
CT (CAT) scans at our Pearlridge clinic near Honolulu, Oahu are quick, painless, accurate, and noninvasive. The CT scan will only take 5 to 10 minutes, and works by using special X-ray equipment to visualize various angles of the body. After these images are captured, a computer is used to assemble them into a three-dimensional cross-section of the body. This detailed cross-section effectively “opens up” the body and shows various types of tissues with great clarity, making it possible for the radiologist to identify normal and abnormal structures.
CT scanners are large and square, with a wide, circular patient opening in the center. During a CT (CAT) scan, the patient will lie on a table, which moves slowly into the CT scanner. Within the machine are two rotating X-ray tubes, which move around the patient’s body to produce the images. The patient might hear clicking or whirring noises as the table moves. Prior to the procedure, CT (CAT) scan patients may be given a contrast material, which improves the quality of the images produced.
Physicians who recommend that patients undergo a CT scan may also be seeking to better see an abnormality found during another test, such as an X-ray or ultrasound. These physicians may refer patients to our clinic for X-ray or bone density scan or may refer the patient to another local hospital or medical center for other diagnostic services.
CT scans are fast, simple tests that can be the key to diagnosing a variety of conditions. If you require a CT (CAT) scan for any reason, and you’re in the West Honolulu, Leeward or Central Oahu areas, choose AccuImaging Pearlridge.
